The Return of the Night Owl

THE RETURN OF THE NIGHT OWL

All thoughts faded from my mind, I felt the hazy darkness of sleep begin to consume me. My bed was warm and soft, I snuggled up beneath the comforter. Pure bliss.

A loud shriek filled the air. I bolted upright in bed. It came from near the window. Then I heard it again. The sleepiness I felt moments ago turned to pure rage.

“Shut up!” I shouted.

“Jim, what the hell are you shouting about so late,” my wife asked, annoyed. It seems my shouting woke her.

“It’s that damn bird again!”

As if on cue, the owl screeched again. Vee let out a big sigh and put the pillow over her head. I knew she was over the owl by this point. More specifically, she was over my issues with the owl. She could ignore it just fine.

“Jim, it’s an owl,” she said, trying to get comfortable again. “Go back to bed.”

“How can I?” I asked. The owl shrieked again. “It sounds just like a woman screaming or something. Every time I’m almost asleep it screeches again and freaks me out! It’s like it knows!”

“The owl doesn’t know when you're about to fall asleep,” she groaned, exasperated. “It’s night, it’s mating season, he’s just trying to get laid. Ignore him.”

“But I-”

“Jim, it’s nearly three in the morning. Either shut up or go outside with the owl to do your screeching.”

I sighed. She wasn’t going to listen anymore and I really didn’t want to fight over a stupid bird. The owl shrieked again. I shuddered. She was right, it was just some horny bird, but the sounds it made still gave me the chills.

It made three sounds the most. I started to notice after being kept up for the fourth night in a row. One sounded like a horse's whinny, and that one wasn’t too bad, but I hated the other two. One sounded like a screaming woman, and the other sounded like a wet gurgle. Like someone was drowning.

Unfortunately, it made these sounds the most. The disturbing sounds and the images my half-asleep mind would associate them with, stopped me from getting any decent sleep. I was losing my mind.

I think I barely slept all night. I felt like I'd just gotten a few minutes when Vee suddenly opened the curtains, flooding the room with sunlight.

“Rise and shine!” She cried cheerfully.

I groaned loudly and covered my head with the blanket. I had to do something about that damn bird.

Work was torture that day. I could barely focus. I was lucky there wasn’t too much paperwork at my desk that day. Still, what little work I did have was done sloppily. Even my boss called me in to ask about it. I was angry. Work was supposed to be easier now.

Vee and I moved into the country to get away from the noise. We thought the country would be more peaceful, that we’d feel more relaxed, wide beautiful forests, crystal lakes, and the gentle chirping of birds. Gentle chirping, not howling like a horror movie victim. That stupid owl had been there every night since we moved. I couldn’t take it anymore.

I was exhausted by the time I finally made my way back home. I glanced around at the treetops as I got out of the car. The owl sounded loud, so its nest had to be nearby. I didn’t see anything. I’d make it a point to search for it on my next day off. I was like a zombie as I tossed my jacket by the door and made my way to the kitchen. Vee was finishing dinner.

“Welcome back, Honey,” she said cheerfully. “How was work?”

I muttered something vaguely, but I doubted it was anything recognizable in the English language. Vee frowned and came over to me. She leaned down to look at me and shook her head sadly.

“You look miserable,” she said.

“I feel miserable, Vee,” I sighed, pressing my hands to my eyes. “It’s the damn owl. I haven’t slept in days.”

“Why don’t we call somebody to get rid of it?” She asked gently.

“You don’t think I tried?!” I snapped at her. “It’s not actually ‘in the house’ so there’s nothing they can legally do!”

“Don’t talk to me like that, Jim!” She snapped back. “I’m just trying to help.”

“You want to help? Load up that old shotgun of mine; I’ll get rid of that thing for good.”

“Jim, what are you thinking?!” She shouted. “Can't we just catch it or something? That poor owl is just trying to find a mate; he doesn’t deserve to die for it.”

“Then you screw the bird, Vee! Maybe I can get both of you to finally shut up!”

She stared at me silently, but I felt the darkness in the air. I’d gone too far. I reached out to grab her hand but she pulled away quickly. She walked out the back door, slamming it behind her. I let out a frustrated sigh. This bird was ruining everything. My new home, my job, my health, even my relationship. I had to get rid of it. I knew Vee would probably be out late cooling off. If I was quick about it I could get rid of the thing before she got back. She’d never have to know.

My old shotgun hadn’t been fired in years, but I kept it in good condition. I loaded two shells into it but pocketed a few extra. Just in case. The sun was beginning to set. It’d be awake soon. I went out to my porch and waited. As the sun dipped lower and lower the darkness grew. I heard crickets off in the distance. The anticipation built up the longer I sat. Go figure. This would be the one night it didn’t show up.

As if to contradict me I heard the whinny sound of the owl in the distance. I stood up and rushed towards where the sound came from. It was getting dark now, the ground was getting hard to see and the trees were barely more than shadows. It would be fine. I left the lights on at the house. I’d find my way, then I’d get a good night's sleep.

I heard the sudden shrieking sound of the owl. It was just up ahead, I rushed forward. This would be the last night it made that horrible sound; the last fight Vee and I would have over it. The moon was covered by heavy clouds. It was pitch black, but I adjusted my ears to the sounds of the darkness. I heard a rustling near the bushes, then the whinny sound again. I took aim near the sound and fired.

It made a terrible shrieking sound; I heard a desperate rustling in the bushes. I got it! I took aim and fired again. This time it made the gurgling noise, but it was strange and faint. I reloaded the gun and went over. I wanted to make sure it was gone for good. As I approached I saw something strange next to the bush. An odd-shaped object, hard to make out in the dark. I reached forward cautiously and touched it.

I forgot about the owl for a moment and picked it up. It was a tube of some kind. I held it close to see it better. A whistle? I didn’t make it a habit to put strange things in my mouth, but I was curious. I blew into it, from the other end exited a horrible whinny sound. I felt my heart sink at the sound, I felt cold all over. A bird whistle. I stood up and went over to the bush slowly.

I saw a crumpled heap behind it, much too big to be an owl. As the clouds shifted moonlight illuminated what it was. Vee. Her face was a pulverized mess of blood and bone, but her clothes were the same ones from earlier today. She clutched a canvas sack in her hand. It seems like we were both planning to get rid of the owl tonight. Only her idea was better. I dropped to my knees and started sobbing. Vee.

I heard another whinny above me. I glanced up to see the owl standing on a branch above us. Its yellow eyes were almost glowing in the moonlight as it looked down at us. It made the whinny sound again. Maybe it was my sleep-deprived brain, maybe it was my grief, but, for some reason, it almost sounded like a laugh.

A thought-provoking look at the gene-editing revolution

Walter Isaacson’s latest book profiles Jennifer Doudna and her remarkable discovery.

In 2016, I called
The Gene: An Intimate History one of my favorite books of the year. The book’s author, Siddhartha Mukherjee, decided to write it largely because of a huge advance that had received far less attention than it deserved: Biochemist Jennifer Doudna and microbiologist Emmanuelle Charpentier’s discovery of “genetic scissors” that allow scientists to cut any DNA sequence with incredible precision. Doudna and Charpentier’s discovery earned them the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

The “scissors” Doudna and Charpentier discovered are known as CRISPR (pronounced like “crisper”), which stands for Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeat. The CRISPR system is a sophisticated defense that bacteria evolved to disarm invading viruses, similar to the way fungi developed penicillin to protect themselves against bacterial infection. The CRISPR system makes it much easier for scientists to alter human and other genomes in beneficial ways, such as repairing gene mutations that cause awful diseases like cystic fibrosis.

In the five years since Mukherjee wrote his book, researchers have done a remarkable job of honing the CRISPR system for medical and agricultural applications, and my excitement about CRISPR has grown from super high to off the charts. CRISPR has fundamentally changed my thinking about what’s possible for improving the health and nutrition of families in poor countries—and how quickly. For example, it took more than 30 years to develop the first effective vaccine for malaria (which the Gates Foundation helped fund)—and that vaccine has an efficacy of only about 50 percent against severe malaria in the first year, dropping in subsequent years. Thanks to the CRISPR system, it’s very likely that our grantees will be able to develop much more effective vaccines in the next five years.

The foundation is investing in many other projects that use the CRISPR system, such as:

  • plant varieties that can withstand the effects of climate change
  • a new suite of tools called programmable medical therapies, which could greatly speed up the development of treatments for new viruses and head off future pandemics
  • quick, inexpensive ways of diagnosing diseases in poor countries
  • monoclonal antibodies that could target and kill the pathogens that cause malaria and AIDS.

When I heard that one of my favorite authors, Walter Isaacson, was working on a book about CRISPR and its inventor, I was eager to read it. The title, The Code Breaker: Jennifer Doudna, Gene Editing, and the Future of the Human Race, suggests that the book is a biography of Doudna, but its scope is broader than that. In fact, Isaacson goes into detail about every CRISPR researcher the foundation is supporting (and many others as well). I found the book to be valuable on a number of levels.

First, it’s great to read a story about scientific discovery with a woman at its center. As a dad, I was touched by the sections in which Doudna’s father, Martin, who was a professor, helps stoke his daughter’s passion for science and her confidence to pursue it at the highest levels. Unfortunately, Martin died of melanoma before his daughter achieved international fame.

Second, I thought Isaacson did a good job of highlighting the most important ethical questions that arise from the CRISPR revolution. Many applications of CRISPR are inarguably good, such as using it to cure blood diseases like sickle cell anemia and beta thalassemia. In these cases, scientists are alleviating human suffering in a way that does not alter the human germline. In other words, the edits affect only the person who receives them and do not get passed along to subsequent generations.

But some scientists are not treating the germline as a red line. As Isaacson covers with nuance, three years ago a Chinese researcher named He Jiankui used CRISPR to edit the genomes of human embryos and then implanted these embryos in women who consented to carrying them to term. Two babies, named Nana and Lulu, have now been born from those embryos. If Nana and Lulu someday have babies of their own, their babies will inherit the genetic modifications Nana and Lulu received. The Chinese researcher’s intentions were good—helping HIV-positive couples give birth to children who had a gene that would confer resistance to infection with HIV—but he disregarded scientific guardrails established by Chinese and American authorities.

While the foundation is not funding any CRISPR projects that involve germline editing, Doudna says it doesn’t make sense to ban germline editing outright. For one thing, she argues, editing that does not involve germline cells, known as “somatic editing,” has limitations. As I mentioned above, scientists are now able to cure sickle cell anemia, but that somatic approach is out of reach for the vast majority of the four million people who suffer from the disease, because it’s such a complex and expensive procedure and can only be done in top-tier hospitals. The germline version might be much less expensive and therefore much more accessible in low- and middle-income countries, which are home to most of the 300,000 babies born with sickle-cell disease each year.

But then another ethical dilemma arises. In Isaacson’s words, “Let’s suppose that researchers show that editing out the sickle-cell mutation is safe. Would there then be any reason to prohibit parents from having the gene edited out when they conceive children?” His answer: maybe. Isaacson introduces us to a California teen named David Sanchez, who gets sickle-cell crises so debilitating that he had to drop out of high school. When one of Sanchez’s doctors told him that “maybe one day with CRISPR they could go in and change the gene in the embryo so that the kid, when it’s born doesn’t have sickle cell,” Sanchez responded in a way you might not expect: “I think it should be up to the kid later,” he said. “There’s a lot of things that I learned having sickle cell. Because I had it, I learned patience with everyone.” The moral of the story: figuring out what’s right to edit into or out of a human genome is not clear cut.

The Code Breaker is highly accessible for non-scientists. And that’s super important, because the ethics of CRISPR’s use are not clear. Doudna is now spending a big portion of her time focused on these moral and ethical issues, especially the potential for genetic editing to exacerbate inequality. As she says to Isaacson, “If you think we face inequalities now, imagine what it would be like if society became genetically tiered along economic lines and we transcribed our financial inequality into our genetic code.”

As with artificial intelligence, facial recognition, and other digital technologies, the public should play an engaged role in drawing the ethical lines. That’s the best way to ensure that the world maximizes the potential for these remarkable innovations to improve the human condition.

5 books I loved reading this year

Lately, I’ve found myself drawn to the kinds of books I would’ve liked as a kid.

When I was a kid, I was obsessed with science fiction. Paul Allen and I would spend countless hours discussing Isaac Asimov’s original Foundation trilogy. I read every book by Edgar Rice Burroughs and Robert Heinlein. (The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress was a particular favorite.) There was something so thrilling to me about these stories that pushed the limits of what was possible.

As I got older, I started reading a lot more non-fiction. I was still interested in books that explored the implications of innovation, but it felt more important to learn something about our real world along the way. Lately, though, I’ve found myself drawn back to the kinds of books I would’ve loved as a kid.

My holiday reading list this year includes two terrific science fiction stories. One takes place nearly 12 light-years away from our sun, and the other is set right here in the United States—but both made me think about how people can use technology to respond to challenges. I’ve also included a pair of non-fiction books about cutting-edge science and a novel that made me look at one of history’s most famous figures in a new light.

I read a lot of great books this year—including John Doerr’s latest about climate change—but these were some of my favorites.

A Thousand Brains: A New Theory of Intelligence, by Jeff Hawkins. Few subjects have captured the imaginations of science fiction writers like artificial intelligence. If you’re interested in learning more about what it might take to create a true AI, this book offers a fascinating theory. Hawkins may be best known as the co-inventor of the PalmPilot, but he’s spent decades thinking about the connections between neuroscience and machine learning, and there’s no better introduction to his thinking than this book.

The Code Breaker: Jennifer Doudna, Gene Editing, and the Future of the Human Race, by Walter Isaacson. The CRISPR gene editing system is one of the coolest and perhaps most consequential scientific breakthroughs of the last decade. I’m familiar with it because of my work at the foundation—we’re funding a number of projects that use the technology—but I still learned a lot from this comprehensive and accessible book about its discovery by Nobel Prize-winning biochemist Jennifer Doudna and her colleagues. Isaacson does a good job highlighting the most important ethical questions around gene editing.

Klara and the Sun, by Kazuo Ishiguro. I love a good robot story, and Ishiguro’s novel about an “artificial friend” to a sick young girl is no exception. Although it takes place in a dystopian future, the robots aren’t a force for evil. Instead, they serve as companions to keep people company. This book made me think about what life with super intelligent robots might look like—and whether we’ll treat these kinds of machines as pieces of technology or as something more.

Hamnet, by Maggie O’Farrell. If you’re a Shakespeare fan, you’ll love this moving novel about how his personal life might’ve influenced the writing of one of his most famous plays. O’Farrell has built her story on two facts we know to be true about “The Bard”: his son Hamnet died at the age of 11, and a couple years later, Shakespeare wrote a tragedy called Hamlet. I especially enjoyed reading about his wife, Anne, who is imagined here as an almost supernatural figure.

Project Hail Mary, by Andy Weir. Like most people, I was first introduced to Weir’s writing through The Martian. His latest novel is a wild tale about a high school science teacher who wakes up in a different star system with no memory of how he got there. The rest of the story is all about how he uses science and engineering to save the day. It’s a fun read, and I finished the whole thing in one weekend.

How far would you go to save the world?

Even if you aren’t a big science fiction fan, Project Hail Mary is a lot of fun.

Have you ever read a book that's hard to tell people about without giving away some of the plot? I recently finished Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir and couldn’t wait to recommend it. But as soon as I started talking about it to some colleagues, I realized there was a problem: there was no way to explain why I liked the book so much without spoiling one of its big surprises.

Here’s what I can say without ruining anything for you: Project Hail Mary is the latest novel by Andy Weir, who is best known for writing The Martian. It tells the story of Ryland Grace, a high school science teacher who wakes up alone on a spaceship in a different star system with no memory of how he got there. He quickly figures out that he’s been sent on a mission to save our solar system from a microorganism called the Astrophage, which is essentially eating our sun. If Ryland doesn’t succeed, the Earth will enter a new ice age that kills billions of people.

The twist comes about a quarter of the way into the book. So if you want to go into it blind, you should probably stop reading this now. I won’t ruin the ending or anything like that, but I’m going to give away a bit more than the summary on the book jacket.

It turns out that Ryland isn’t the only one looking for a way to stop the Astrophage. He crosses paths with an alien that looks like a Labrador-sized spider made out of rock. The rest of the book is about Ryland and his new alien friend—whom he not-so-cleverly names Rocky—working together to save their home planets.

Weir offers a somewhat plausible notion of what it would be like to make first contact. Unlike the humanoid extraterrestrials you see in a lot of science fiction, Rocky is completely alien in every sense of the word. He breathes ammonia, uses echolocation to “see,” and speaks using musical notes. Ryland has to create a smart bit of software before they can communicate. The two end up bonding over being lonely travelers who are light years from home, and they develop a beautiful friendship despite being so different from one another.

As I was reading about Rocky, I couldn’t help but think about Nick Lane’s excellent book The Vital Question. Lane helps you understand the extraordinary number of things that had to line up perfectly to create complex life on Earth. The odds that there is another sentient species relatively nearby seem low. (Rocky is from the 40 Eridani system, which is “only” 16 lightyears away from our sun.) Still, it’s exciting to think about what other life might be out there.

Like Weir’s other books, Project Hail Mary is clever about the dilemmas the hero gets put into. Ryland is a fundamentally decent and likable main character who you can’t help but root for. Because he has amnesia at the beginning of the book, you get to puzzle out what’s happening along with him, which is a lot of fun. He also has a great sense of humor. When Ryland realizes he’s about to become the first human to meet an alien, he thinks, “If there is hostile intent, what would I do about it? Die. That’s what I’d do. I’m a scientist, not Buck Rogers.”

He reminded me a lot of Mark Watney, the protagonist in The Martian. The two books deal with similar themes about how people work together in challenging situations, although the big difference with Project Hail Mary is that not all of the collaborators are human. I loved reading about how Ryland and Rocky combined their species’ expertise to solve problems they wouldn’t have been able to tackle on their own.

I thought some parts of the story—like how Ryland gets picked for his mission and how powerful the United Nations task force that organizes his mission is—were a bit unbelievable. They didn’t bother me too much, though. Science fiction gets a lot of latitude to conjure things up. It’s hard to be too distracted by something being implausible when you’re reading a story about a giant space spider.

I recommend the book for anyone who is in the mood for a fun diversion. I started it on a Saturday and finished it on Sunday, and it was a great way to spend a weekend. Even if you aren’t a big science fiction fan, Project Hail Mary is a terrific story about two friends using science and engineering to save the day.

A thought-provoking tale of friendship and robots

Klara and the Sun made me think about what life with super intelligent machines might look like.

Most fiction about robots seems to fall into one of two categories: stories about how they’re going to kill us all or stories about how robots become an integral part of our lives. Although I enjoy the former—the first two Terminator movies are classics for a reason, and there are some terrific episodes of Black Mirror that tackle the subject—I’m drawn more to books and movies that paint robots in a positive light.

Robots are going to play a huge role in our future, and fiction is a great way to explore what exactly that might mean. So, when I found out that Kazuo Ishiguro had written a new novel about robots called Klara and the Sun, I couldn’t wait to pick it up. I read Remains of the Day years ago and thought it was brilliant. His latest is just as thoughtful and beautifully written as you’d expect from him.

The Klara in the title is an “artificial friend” who provides companionship to a sick 14-year-old girl named Josie. The story takes place in a dystopian future where children have been genetically “lifted’ to be smarter. The process of lifting is risky, and it’s the cause of Josie’s illness. Children only attend school online, so many kids have robot friends like Klara to try and make up for the lack of socialization. We don’t find out much about the world outside of Josie’s home, but there are references to frequent terrorism and environmental catastrophe.

Klara is programmed to be deeply empathetic and curious about the world. Because the book is told in the first person, we see everything from her perspective, which is both fascinating and odd. There are long stretches where you’ll almost forget that she isn’t human.

One of the most striking things about the book is Ishiguro’s depiction of Klara’s vision. Instead of having one large field of vision, she seems to see the world through a series of pixel-like boxes. This results in some pretty wild descriptions, like this one when Klara looks at an adult woman she meets: “In one box she was visible only from her waist to the upper part of her neck, while the box beside it was almost entirely taken up by her eyes.” I found it a bit confusing, although it was a good reminder that Klara isn’t like us no matter how human she may seem at times.

As I was reading the book, I couldn’t help but think about which parts of it paint a picture of our likely future—and which parts were pure fiction. I believe we’ll someday have both companion and utilitarian robots in our lives. Klara is mostly a companion. She’s not doing much of what you’d expect from a utilitarian robot, like bringing you things or preparing your meals. Her purpose is almost entirely social, and although I don’t know if we’ll ever have robots as emotionally sophisticated as she is, we might see pretty good companion robots emerge in the next decade.

There’s a lot of work going on in this space, especially around companion robots for older people. Loneliness is a real health problem in old age that increases your risk of premature death—a fact that has been made more evident by social isolation many seniors experienced during the pandemic. Research shows that having a pet can significantly ease this burden. Companion robots like Klara would be the next step up from that.

I’m curious to see whether people will treat these kinds of robots as pieces of technology or as something more. A lot of robot stories explore what happens when we start to see them as human. In Klara and the Sun, Josie seems to understand that her companion is artificial, but there are some uncomfortable scenes where Josie’s mom starts to treat Klara as another daughter. (The movie Her is about an artificial intelligence rather than a robot, but it deals with a similar scenario where a human develops complicated feelings.)

I’m inclined to think like Josie and see robots as machines, no matter how intelligent and human-like they become. In A Thousand Brains, Jeff Hawkins explores at length what moral obligation we have to our machines. Should we feel bad about pulling the plug on an artificial intelligence if it’s as human-like as Klara? Hawkins concludes that the answer is no. I agree with him, although I can imagine a future where other people might not.

Ishiguro certainly makes you think about what life with super intelligent robots might look like. He never claims to be a technologist or a futurist, but his perspective on artificial life is provocative nonetheless. At the end of the book, when someone asks Klara if she thinks she succeeded at her objective, she says, “Yes, I believe I gave good service and prevented Josie from becoming lonely.” In a world filled with stories about killer machines, it was refreshing to read about a future where robots make our lives better—even if they complicate things along the way.

3 Essential Secrets To 100% Passive Income

Passive Income Secret #1...

Make Money From Other People's Products

Making money from other peoples products is much easier than trying to create a product of your own. I found this out the hard way. I started with my own product. A simple ebook that I'd written myself. Writing the book took a lot of time, and so did creating a web-page to sell it!

I sold the book for $19.95 and before long I was making about $500 a month. I was chuffed to bits. But it obviously wasn't enough to quit my day job.

I wanted to make more money, but I didn't have anything else to sell.

That's when I discovered affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing is basically selling other peoples products for a commission. The first product I sold was an online course that costs $200. My commission was 50% so I made $100 per sale.

Since then I've never looked back.

I've now sold thousands of products as an affiliate... in dozens of different markets (most of which I know absolutely nothing about) there's no way I could have made all of those products myself.

But the products are only half of the story. To sell a product you need sales copy. Writing sales copy that sells is incredibly difficult. It's a skill that very few people can do well and those that can charge a fortune for it! You could pay over $10,000 for a single sales letter!

Fortunately, the products that you'll be selling already have sales letters.

If you want to make a lot of money, selling other peoples products saves you stacks of time and allows you to skip LOTS of learning curves. They know what they're doing. They have great products. They have fantastic sales copy. They do all of the hard stuff... you just get paid.

Making money selling other peoples products is the best way to make money because...

  • You can get started NOW. You don't have to waste months creating a product (That probably won't sell anyway!)

  • You don't have to deal with the customer. So you'll never have to answer any questions or speak to anybody.

  • You don't have to write a sales page. Believe me... Writing a sales page (like this one) is harder than creating a product!

Selling other peoples products is much easier than you might expect. You can get started in minutes and most products include sales tools that that you can just copy and paste.

Now lets look at secret number 2...

Passive Income Secret #2...

Give Away Something Of Value

There is a well established psychological law called the Law of Reciprocation. It states that when you do something for another person, they are much more likely to do something for you.

In sales, this translates to...

Give something of value, get the sale.

The Law of Reciprocation is the reason that many insurance companies give away free pens. Pens cost money. Companies only give them out because they know that it increases the probability of getting the sale.

The crazy thing is, you can...

Give away ANYTHING that is perceived as value to boost your sales.

It doesn't have to be a physical object, it can be some free advice, a tip, a secret, something entertaining or even a funny picture! All of these examples have been proven to increase the probability of getting a sale through the Law of Reciprocation.

Passive Income Secret #3

This is the most important secret of all...

Secret 1 And 2 Must Be 100% Fully Automated!

If you want to make money, then you need a system that works for you. Don't sell your time for money. That's how a job works... and it will NEVER make you rich. Time is limited.... systems are not.

My system fully automates Passive Income Secret 1 and 2

We do have a small caveat here... As I mentioned before, you need to do some "work" to get started. But it only takes a couple of hours. After that, the system does all of the work for you.

Within just a couple of hours of reading this page you will have a brand new 100% Passive Income Stream. My system will do all of the work for you. It's runs on auto-pilot 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. It never stops... and neither will your income!

Creating A 100% Passive Income System

To create a system that can provide you with a fully automated passive income, I leveraged 3 powerful resources. The first 2 make it possible to make money selling other peoples products, the 3rd automates the process and does all of the work for you!

Passive Income System Resource #1

Our 1st resource is ClickBank

ClickBank provide the products that my system will sell for you. They have tens of thousands of products in dozens of different markets. ClickBank is easy to use, fast, reliable and very profitable.

ClickBank is...

  • 100% Free!

  • Gives You Instant Access to Tens of Thousand of Products that You Can Sell For Huge Commissions!

  • Earn 50% - 75% Of The Sale Price Per Sale!

  • Up-sells that INCREASE Your PROFITS Automatically!

  • Ongoing Subscriptions That Pay You Additional Commission EVERY MONTH!!

  • Ready Made Affiliate Resources

  • High Converting Sales Pages

  • No Need to Create a Product!

  • No Need to Write ANY Sales Copy

  • No Need to Talk To ANYBODY EVER!

  • Get Paid Directly into Your Bank Every Week!

Thanks to ClickBank, my system has thousands of products that it can sell for you.... Now it needs a place to sell them...

Passive Income System Resource #2

Our 2nd resource provides an established platform from which we can sell ClickBank products. It's one of the most powerful and popular social media platforms on the internet... Twitter!

Twitter is the perfect platform for making money selling other peoples products because...

  • It's 100% Free

  • It gives you instant access to millions of potential customers

  • You don't need a website

  • It's quick and easy to start from scratch

I don't expect you to have a Twitter account already. So right now, I know that you don't have any followers. That's completely fine.

Passive Income System Resource #3

The 3rd resource that I leveraged is a little more complicated.

This resource didn't already exist, so I had to create it.

This is how it works...

If you're a computer programmer, you'll find this interesting... If you're not a computer programmer, you can skip the next sentence!

The system utilizes a MySQL database of Tweets that are triggered by a Cron job that activates a PHP script to create an RSS feed that is linked to IFTTT and published to Twitter on a never ending loop.

Phew!

OK, I promise... no more tech jargon!

So that's how it works... now without the jargon, this is what it does...

It Publishes Your Affiliate Links To Twitter On Auto-Pilot

Once I'd set everything up, I had a fully automated system that published affiliate links to my Twitter account every few hours on a never ending loop!

I sat back with a huge grin on my face and waited for my commissions to come rolling in.....

That didn't happen. Instead....

My Account Got Suspended!

Twitter suspended my account!

Twitter really don't like duplicate content. So as my Tweets looped around my account got suspended.

But I wasn't ready to give up!

The "SECRET SAUCE" Behind Your 100% Passive Income

My system was publishing my affiliate links to Twitter on a never ending loop. It was 100% fully automated, but the duplicate content caused Twitter to suspend my account.

I needed to find a way of posting my affiliate links automatically, without triggering Twitter's duplicate content policy.... and I found one!!!

Let me introduce you to "Spinning"...

Spinning can transform a single Tweet into hundreds of unique random combinations.

To show you how it works, here's a very simple example of spinning one word. Click on (Spin) below to spin the word "Morning". Keep clicking, there are plenty of options to see! (Guess which is my favourite!)

(Spin)

Good Morning 🌞

This example is completely random, but it only spins one word. So it often produces the same result. However, you can spin all of the words in a Tweet.... or even the entire Tweet!

Now let's take a look at a Tweet that my system is automatically publishing to my Twitter account...

(Spin)

Click On (Spin) Above To See The Tweet!

Every variation of this Tweet promotes a ClickBank product that my followers love.... and I get $46.95 commission per sale!

This is just one of my Tweets.

I have more Tweets just like this one, promoting my affiliate links and putting money into my pocket completely automatically.

Thanks to spinning, each Tweet is randomly generated so I have an endless loop of unique Tweets being automatically published to my Twitter account. Every single one promotes a product that pays me a huge commission!

You could have a list of Tweets just like mine in about 30 minutes. Then my PASSIVE INCOME SYSTEM will publish your Tweets to your Twitter account completely automatically. You'll have an endless loop of unique Tweets promoting your affiliate links FOREVER!

My system is called AutoTweet, and it will feed your Twitter account like this forever!

But this is just the tip of the iceberg.

How To Transform Income Streams Into

Raging Rivers Of Abundance!

When I Discovered This Secret I Felt Like King Midas!

With absolutely no more effort, you can transform every fully automated Tweet into a virtual cash machine that pumps more and more money into your pocket every single week.

This is how it works...

Remember my first Tweet above that makes $46.95 per sale? Well the product that it promotes isn't just a one off purchase. Customers are also invited to sign up to a membership program.

The membership program costs $37 per month, and pays 65% commission. So that's $24 per month, per customer!

Not just once, but...

$24 Every Month For Every Member!

There's no limit to how many people sign up. If 10 people sign up you get $240 per month, if 100 people sign up you get $2,400 per month! If a thousand people sign up... well, you get the picture! $24,000 per month is a LOT of money from something that is FULLY AUTOMATED!

This incredible passive income comes from just one Tweet, promoting one ClickBank product.

ClickBank has thousands of products just like this one, with ongoing membership programs that pay you a commission every single month.

I imagine that by now you have some questions... here are my answers to the questions that I think most people will have. If I don't answer your question here then please email me at s.hall@simplesolutions.club

Question #1

"I Don't Even Have A Twitter Account, Can I Still Do This?"

YES!

In fact, it's better to start with a brand new account. I don't expect you to use an existing account to do this, I will show you how to get started from scratch. Even if you've never used Twitter before and don't know how it works.

Within 2 hours of reading this page you'll have a Twitter account that's so awesome people will be falling over themselves to follow you. It'll be filled with the very latest (niche specific) news, bursting with value and promoting lots of products that will pay you huge commissions!

Best of all, thanks to AutoTweet... it'll be doing all of this COMPLETELY AUTOMATICALLY!

Question #2

"How Do I Get Paid Selling Other Peoples Products?"

Once you've created your free affiliate account with ClickBank, take a look through the products available in the marketplace and click on the 'Promote' button to create your affiliate link. Then simply add the link to the end of your Tweet.

In the members area I'll show you my exact work flow. Just watch, pause and copy. It's really quick and very easy.

Question #3

"How Much Money Will I Make?"

There are tens of thousands of products available for you to sell on the ClickBank marketplace. Most of them pay 50% to 75% commission on the sale and sell for anything between $20 and $200+

There are also products you can sell that have an ongoing membership program. When you sell one of these then you get paid over and over again, every month for as long as the customer remains a member.

For obvious reasons I tend to stick to promoting those ones as much as possible!

Question #4

"When Can I Get Started?"

TODAY!

You can get started TODAY. It only takes a couple of hours to get everything set up, then AutoTweet will do all of the work for you! Your business will be 100% fully automated. You'll never have to touch it or think about it again.

When you want to make more money, just pick another market and create another AutoTweet campaign! AutoTweet is completely unlimited so you can do this as many times as you like.

Question #5

"You Mentioned I Had To Do "A Couple Of Hours Of Work" Can You Tell Me Exactly What I Need To Do?"

Sure. In fact, I can show you. Here's a quick video I've put together to show you exactly how I use

I provide lots of videos just like this one in the members area.

Simply watch, pause and copy.

You'll have everything up and running within a couple of hours. After that... AutoTweet will do all of the work for you and your income with be 100% passive FOREVER!

Question #6

"I Have ZERO Experience, Are You Sure I'll Be Able To Do This?"

AutoTweet is 100% beginner friendly. It's very easy to use and it works. Here are a few comments from our members:

"Let me tell you how pleased I am to have come across your site: its is the first time in years that I have found a program run by a genuine decent and intelligent fellow human! I have fallen prey to scammers, liars, gurus, et al, just like millions of other folk.

But when I found your AutoTweet idea, the penny finally dropped. This is SO sensible, logical and obvious, that a broad grin swept across my face as I read it all in one gulp."

Tim Stoker - Hamburg, Germany

"I have been using Auto Tweet for a little while now. I liked the idea of the program being able to promote my offers for me on autopilot, I mean who wouldn’t these days, as we all lead busy lifestyles right? It’s also a great way to help build my twitter followers too, which will be very useful.

It is very straight forward to set up and helped by the fact that Steven has provided very easy to follow instructional videos that guide you step by step in how to get up and running quickly. He even gives you tips on how to monetize it and use it to it’s full advantage! I highly recommend you have a look at it – see for yourself what it could do for you."

Darrell Cridland - Vietnam

"I really enjoy using Autotweet! It's fun and I can advertise all my important URLs. The greatest idea of Steven Hall's was to allow me to set a time frame for my Tweets to go out.

If you check this out I'm sure that you will get in and start using it TODAY!

Thank you for giving me this great opportunity, Steven!"

Paulo Oliveira - Massachusetts, USA

"Having already used several auto-tweet applications I find Autotweet extremely easy to setup and use. The perfect time saving tool for all social network marketers, newbies as well as more experienced business people."

John Fagalde - Miami, Florida, USA

"Autotweet automates advertising via Twitter (boring) part of my business, so I can focus on creating imaginative content for my core business."

Lawrence Taffaro - New Orleans, LA, USA

I invested a lot of time creating this system, testing it, tweaking it and perfecting it. I use it to make money from Twitter on auto-pilot. (That's why I created it!) Now I want to give you the opportunity to use it too...

Now I'd like to ask you a question. A very important one...

Do You Have A Millionaire Mindset?

Do You Naturally Attract Wealth, Or Do You Struggle To Make Ends Meet?

This is one of the most important questions on this page. If you have a "Millionaire Mindset" then making money is EASY! If you are struggling to make money then you have a "Poverty Mindset" and before you can be rich this needs to change.

Every wealthy person that I’ve ever met, and this includes many self made multi-millionaires, attributes their success to having the correct mindset.

Most of them weren't born with a Millionaire Mindset, they had to develop one, through arduous study, focus and unwavering belief.

Changing your mindset is difficult. It is deeply rooted in your subconscious mind, the same place that houses your addictions, habits and fears.

If you have a phobia then you probably know that it's irrational. But conscious reasoning doesn't make it go away. Having a poverty mindset is exactly the same. It doesn't matter how much you want to make money, you can't reason with your mindset to make it change.

To change your mindset you need to go a little deeper...

The Most Valuable Free Bonus Ever Offered!

These days, it seems that everything that you buy online comes with a myriad of free bonuses. Usually they are worthless junk harvested from PLR websites to 'fatten-up' the deal. It's a well known marketing gimmick.

The free bonus that I'm about to offer you is very different

Aside of being an entrepreneur, I'm also a certified hypnotist with over 25 years of experience. During the 1990s I was a stage hypnotist, and later ran a very successful private hypnotherapy clinic. I'm also an NLP and Law of Attraction Coach.

I was the first person ever to be awarded Master Trainer for the Association of Cosmic Ordering Practitioners and I've written several books, and given many seminars on conscious manifestation.

My particular area of expertise is helping people to develop a Millionaire Mindset.

If you want to be successful, copying my business model alone is not enough. You also need the correct mindset.

I have created an audio series called "The Millionaire Mindset" It's designed to reprogram your mind so that you attract wealth like a magnet attracts metal.

I've been successfully selling "The Millionaire Mindset" audio program for many years. My customers love it, because it works. Here are a few of the many comments that I receive about this program...

"I listened to Steve's meditations with great interest on two fronts. Firstly because I want to know the methods for tuning myself into the right state for financial efficiency, finding those golden nuggets of ideas that could transform my financial position, and secondly because I'm a clinical hypnotherapist specialising in anxiety and stress and wanted to hear someone else's therapy sessions rather than my own for change!

So after listening to the sessions once through I can report some very positive findings to date.

The amount of ideas that have come into my mind for taking my therapy work forwards, enlarging the audience for a reduced cost to myself, allowing me to offer more for free is mind blowing!

Literally idea after idea keeps on popping into my head!

The sessions themselves are very professional in their construct using a multitude of trance inducing techniques to ensure a powerful and enjoyable session. Each session is carefully crafted, layering suggestions upon suggestions to build deeper levels of absorption into the subconscious mind."

Pete Linforth - Clinical hypnotherapist

"I have been interested in options trading for some time now, and I have invested a lot of time in learning about various trading strategies.

But when it came time to actually execute a trade, I felt very afraid. It was an irrational fear, since I knew that I was well prepared and well-funded. I did not know where the fear was coming from, but it was strong and real, and it prevented me from moving forward.

Your explanation of why I might have this fear and your solution gave me hope. I have listened to your audio files only once so far, but already I am re-energized about trading options, and I don't feel the kind of fear I felt before.

So, thank you so much for helping me to overcome my fear of making money. I am now excited and looking forward to a successful round of options trades.

Thanks again for a wonderful, positive meditations program."

"Steve your 'Millionaire Mindset' audio program is a must!

I have felt so motivated & a real shift in the way I feel about money and being wealthy.

Last night I listened to the 'Motivation' session again, and when I started visualising how I wanted my future to be I had a real shift in emotions I was smiling, felt happy & had a tingle run through my body, now that was really a WOW moment!

Thanks for introducing me to your meditations. Not only am I feeling the shift but with listening to the meditations in the evening I find it a really good way to wind down, relax & on occasion fall asleep! I know though that even as I sleep my subconscious will still take it all in. Thanks"

J Myers (Entrepreneur)

Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, UK

"It all started happening when I started listening!

Steven’s Millionaire Mindset series is CHANGING EVERYTHING! Not only has my attitude about earning changed... but, my vision is more clear and opportunities that I could not have even imagined a few weeks ago are finding me!

So, thank, you Steve for your amazing gift! I hope you realize what a profound opportunity you have given to those (like me) who were struggling financially. If you knew how much I listened to your recordings, you’d definitely realize how much more valuable they are than I paid...and, you’d likely be sick of me by now! ;)"

"Listening to the Millionaire Mindset has become my number one daily task. The sheer fact that I don't need to concentrate, but still hear the words and get the message is a great bonus. It gets me in the mood to do every task that is necessary for me each day and I know that each time I listen, my productivity creeps up a little more because I know I don't have to be afraid of succeeding."

Steven Lucas

Internet Marketer

"Steven, as a fellow hypnotist, I have to say "job well done". I am amazed at the depth of trance and value of the script. You really got it right!"
